Building an eco extension from the ground up
Let’s take you back to the beginning...
The ‘before’ - a small, dark kitchen in need of a refresh.
“Our old kitchen was tired and lacked atmosphere. We longed for a space filled with more light. We wanted to create a cosy but airy and modern environment to spend time in with family and friends...”
The plan was to replace the dated conservatory with a modern eco-extension - opening up the room into one big kitchen and dining area.
Instead of removing the concrete, we cut out blocks and installed ground screws - much quicker, cleaner and greener than breaking up the entire slab.
Once the screws were in place we added an insulated timber base, the perfect foundation for an extension.
Next, the timber frame with ample space for expansive picture windows. We insulated this with wood fibre - a sustainable, high-performance material that’s breathable, ultra-insulating and sound absorbing.
The cladding is Thermowood Pine, chosen for its weather resistance and natural beauty. Heat-treated for stability, it’s eco-friendly, low-maintenance and built to withstand the elements while ageing gracefully
In the workshop, the kitchen was taking shape, crafted from durable oak veneer with sleek ebonised oak plinths.
Instead of covering the plywood edges, we embraced the unique layered pattern.
A subtle detail that complemented the solid oak reeded end panels.
And here it is…
Light-filled, open and built to last.
“The kitchen design phase was considered, constructive and the team helped us realise a perfect solution within budget. The entire team were professional and engaging throughout, making the build relatively stress free. We’re delighted with the space created and that we chose BearHaus and Cub Kitchens to breathe new life into our home.”
